Tails & Dewclaws
At EFR Mini Heelers, we do not dock tails. Our puppies are born with natural tails, and we appreciate both their appearance and their function. We also choose not to remove dewclaws.
Dewclaws are not simply extra toes—they are fully formed structures with their own nerve and blood supply, as well as muscles and tendons. Dewclaws are connected to two major, functioning tendons in the lower leg. Tendons attach muscle to bone, allowing proper movement and stability. When dewclaws are removed, those muscles lose their normal function, which can lead to weakness and muscle atrophy over time.
“Those muscles indicate that the dewclaws have a function. That function is to prevent torque on the leg. If a dog doesn’t have a dewclaw, the leg twists. A lifetime of that and the result can be carpal arthritis, or perhaps injuries to other joints, such as the elbow, shoulder, and toes.”
— Dr. Christine Zink, Canine Sports Medicine Consultant
Mini Heelers are an active, athletic breed that thrives on running, quick turns, and frequent changes in direction. Dewclaws help stabilize the legs, reduce twisting, and provide additional traction—especially during high-impact movement. Because we anticipate an active lifestyle for our puppies, we believe leaving dewclaws intact best supports their long-term health and mobility.
We are committed to supporting our owners throughout the life of their dog. Most importantly, we provide guidance during the crucial early puppyhood period, helping each family establish a strong foundation for a well-balanced, confident, and happy Mini Heeler.
